The average gopher tunnel system is 300 to 600 feet – or 100 to 200 yards – long. However, gopher tunnels measuring over 1,000 feet long have been discovered. It’s worth noting that gophers have an easier time digging through certain soils, allowing them to build long tunnels more quickly. Gophers can most easily burrow their way through sandy, loamy soil because it is so loose and lightweight.
