How to Keep Gophers Out of Your Yard & Garden

Gophers are some of the most destructive pests that live in Riverside and San Bernardino. These burrowing rodents often become a nightmare to homeowners, tunneling through lawns and ransacking gardens. Because of their digging skills, gophers can easily access most yards, even those with fences to keep wildlife out.

If you’re tired of gophers popping up in your yard, here are a few things you can try to keep them out:

  • While gopher exclusion may not be possible for your entire yard, you can keep the rodents out of your gardens with barriers. Try installing mesh barriers around the perimeters of your garden beds that are buried at least 2 feet underground and extend about 1 foot above the ground. These barriers can prevent gophers from burrowing in.
  • Apply gopher repellents around your yard and gardens to deter them from your property. If you’re opposed to using commercial gopher repellents due to concerns about chemicals, do-it-yourself repellents can also be crafted. Scents that have been found to repel gophers include castor oil, garlic, and coffee grounds.

  • Make changes to your yards that will make it less appealing to gophers. These rodents prefer to stay in cover even when above ground, so removing piles of brush and mulch can discourage them. Removing weeds can also make your yard less appealing to gophers, since they often feed on the roots of weeds.
